Abstract

The covid-19 pandemic required social distancing. Virtual contact becomes an alternative, but older people do not have the same digital literacy as younger generations, born in a technological context. The objective was to investigate the use of social media by the elderly to maintain family ties during the covid-19 pandemic. For the present systematic review, searches were carried out in the following databases: BVS, Scopus, PsycInfo, and PubMed between 2020 and 2022. As a result, four categories emerged: connections with the support networks, rituals and familiar organization, multigenerational adaptation process and implications of distancing and strategies developed. Older people use digital resources to communicate with family members and support networks during covid-19, although they do not consider that this alternative replaces living in person. It is up to all generations to ensure access, attention, and adaptation of resources that provide health to older people.
